This sounds very much like your pgplot was installed without color
postscript support. Note this is the pgplot library itself, not the
pgperl interface. Though this is somewhat strange, given that postscript
is enabled by default in pgplot.
Anyway, if you can find the file "drivers.list" somewhere in the pgplot
directory, you can see if the lines mentioning color postscript is
commented out:
PSDRIV 3 /CPS PostScript printers, color, landscape Std F77
If the line starts with an exclamation sign ("!"), then color
postscript is disabled, and pgplot must be re-installed with it enabled.
(Erm ... wasn't it me who installed pgplot for you? I hope I did not
make this mistake, that would be kind of embarrassing. Or maybe I only
installed the pgperl interface, can't remember anymore.)
