Dear fellow McStas users and Monte-Carlo simulators

ILL is looking for someone with experience using McStas to perform guide
simulations. There is an immediate short-term need for which a short term
contract or a secondment could be organised and a longer-term need (say
6-9 months ILL funding).
I would be grateful if you could let me know, as soon as possible, if you or
any of your colleagues are interested in these opportunities.

The selected applicant will work with me (E. Farhi) in collaboration with
the ILL Technical Division in the design of an advanced and large neutron
delivery guide system, feeding 7 ILL instrument positions. Any applicant,
including without long term McStas experience, will be considered.

Postdoc in Radiation Physics


The Radiation Physics Programme at Ris? National Laboratory for Sustainable Energy, Technical University of Denmark, is seeking candidates for a Postdoc position to work on neutron transport simulations for the design update of the European Spallation Source (ESS).

The Radiation Physics Programme is carrying out fundamental and applied research within the areas of retrospective radiation dosimetry, medical and industrial dosimetry, and reactor physics. The programme presently consists of 25 people including Researchers, Technicians and PhD students, engaged in research, innovation and education.

Job description 
The successful candidate will join a research project funded by the Danish Agency for Science Technology and Innovation in support of the design update phase of ESS. The design update includes simulation of essential ESS components including the target-moderator and beam extraction system.

The project aims at interfacing Monte Carlo neutron transport codes for hot/thermal and for cold neutrons and applying these in the optimization of the target/moderator and beam extraction system of the neutron spallation source. 
The project will be undertaken in close collaboration with the ESS organization in Lund, Sweden, and with other European project participants. 

Qualifications
The candidate should have a PhD in theoretical or experimental physics with a strong background in computational physics or equivalent.

Assessment
In the assessment of the candidates consideration will be given to:

	? scientific production and research potential at international level
	? innovative skills and the ability to generate new ideas
	? an all-round experience basis, preferably including international experience
	? the ability to contribute to development of the department?s internal and external cooperation

Hello everyone,


A reasonably serious bug in our rectangular focusing routine was identified by several McStas users and has now been corrected. We felt that this warranted an update of the stable McStas release, meaning a new 1.12c release.

The 1.12c release is available now from http://www.mcstas.org/download.

A complete liste of changes is available at http://www.mcstas.org/download/src/CHANGES


For those of you looking forward to the 2.0 release, all required new functionality has been implemented, but documentation is still lacking. The 2.0 release will become officially available once the documentation has been updated, hopefully fall 2011.

Hello again everyone,


Unfortunately, the McStas 1.12c release from May 24th contained a series of bugs, primarily in source components, related to a type-change of the neutron counter.

We have decided that since only a limited number of people have downloaded the release, we will simply re-release McStas 1.12c with the above bugs fixed.

If you already downloaded and installed the packages released on May 24th, please re-download and reinstall.

Hi Danielle,

Yes there are two models that you may use. The Collimator_radial may be
used both in approximated and exact models. They should be equivalent in
results. The transmission parameter is the maximum value of the triangular
transmission within the Soller blades.

From time to time I get an error when trying to use MPI on my laptop (dual 
core).
It runs fine most of the times but every now and then I get this:

No MPI/grid machine list. Running locally.

  or use option --machines=<file>

You got me started!

Now... I of course come with some questions...
First one is related to the use of facultative components built using a 
WHEN.

I 'd like to be able to activate them via an INSTRUMENT parameter (which I 
understand is out of scope in the WHEN).

This is what I did:

I understand that the compiler expects the declare to be constants but I 
thought this followed the tip given in the manual ....

As an additional remark, the manual references Neutron 
site/ILL/ILL_TOF_Env as an example... but this file does not exist on my 
install.

Hello Jean-Francois,

Thanks for the special Barbapapa instrument file, which I should think
about including in the McStas package ;-) .

The declaration of variables can only be initialized to constants in
DECLARE. For other assignements, use the INITIALIZE:

DECLARE

  int NOK9_type=0;

INITIALIZE

  NOK9_type = NOK9_Type;

No idea why this fails, as you only use few neutron events. And it sems to
occur immediately when starting (please confirm).
