I am sure your speculation is right; natural left/right references should be with respect to the neutron travel direction.
That being said we have no official “standard” in this respect, but it would make sense to extend our NOMENCLATURE document in this direction.

The `Guide_gravity` component can specify different m coatings for left and right, but I want to know which left and right they refer to: looking in the beam propagation direction, or the other way around? I'm guessing the former, but it's not clear from the component documentation.
